There is no single “best” 21700 cell. There is only the right cell for your load. Start by deciding whether your pack is limited by energy (runtime) or power (peak current). Then check the temperature range, the cycle-life rating and whether the cell will stay available. Panasonic, Samsung SDI, Molicel and EVE all make tier-one cylindrical cells, but each brand’s range leans a different way.
Key Takeaways
- Energy cells give the most runtime. Power cells handle high current with less heat. Very few cells do both well.
- Molicel’s P45B is rated for 45 A continuous discharge but only 0–60 °C charging (Molicel).
- EVE’s 21700 58E is rated at 290 Wh/kg with over 1,000 cycles and 3C continuous discharge (EVE Energy).
- Supply stability and traceability matter as much as the specs. A cell change later can force you to recertify.
18650 or 21700?
For new designs, 21700 is usually the better choice. Each cell holds more energy, so you need fewer cells, fewer welds and fewer parallel connections for the same capacity. That lowers assembly cost and removes failure points. 18650 still makes sense when the space is fixed by an existing product or when you need a specific certified legacy cell. Our Samsung 18650 guide and IMR/ICR/INR/IFR comparison cover the older format.
Energy Cells vs Power Cells
| Factor | Energy cell | Power cell |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Higher (typically 5,000 mAh and up for 21700) | Lower (typically 4,000–4,500 mAh) |
| Internal resistance | Higher | Lower, so less heat at high current |
| Best for | Medical carts, e-bikes, storage, AGVs | Power tools, drones, robots with high peak loads |
| Risk if chosen wrongly | Voltage sag and overheating under peak load | Paying for power you don’t use and getting less runtime |
To decide, divide your peak current by the number of parallel cells and compare the result with the cell’s continuous rating. C-rate explained walks through the maths.
How the Four Brands Compare
Molicel: high-power specialist
Molicel’s cells are built for high discharge rates. The INR-21700-P45B datasheet lists 4,500 mAh typical capacity, 45 A continuous discharge, 242 Wh/kg and a 70 g maximum weight. It allows discharge from -40 °C to 60 °C, but charging only from 0 °C to 60 °C. Best for: power tools, drones, robotics and high-performance mobility.
EVE Energy: capacity and value, high volume
EVE is one of the largest cylindrical cell makers and has both energy and power lines. According to EVE, the 21700 58E reaches 290 Wh/kg, runs over 1,000 cycles, discharges continuously at 3C and works from -20 °C to 60 °C. The tabless 40PL targets power tools with 100 A continuous discharge. Best for: e-bikes, AGVs, portable storage and cost-sensitive volume projects.
Samsung SDI: broad range, strong in power tools
Samsung SDI makes both energy and high-power 21700 cells. Its tabless PRiMX 50U-Power cell is designed for professional power tools that need high instant power and fast charging. Best for: power tools, garden equipment and e-mobility.
Panasonic: established energy cells for OEM programs
Panasonic Energy has one of the longest track records in cylindrical Li-ion. It is known for consistent energy cells used in OEM programs. Best for: medical, industrial and premium consumer packs where long-term consistency is the priority.
Five Checks Before You Commit to a Cell
- Datasheet limits vs your use case: continuous and pulse current, and the charge temperature range. Charging below 0 °C can cause lithium plating (NREL).
- UN38.3 test summary for the exact cell model (see UN38.3 explained).
- Safety certifications that your pack certification can build on, such as IEC 62133-2 or UL cell listings.
- Genuine supply: buy through authorized channels with batch traceability. Counterfeit and re-wrapped cells are common in the grey market.
- Lifecycle: confirm the model will stay in production for your product’s lifetime, and name an approved second-source cell.
Why the Pack Builder’s Cell Handling Matters
Even tier-one cells vary slightly from one to the next. A good pack builder checks incoming cells for open-circuit voltage and internal resistance, then sorts and matches them before welding. This keeps parallel groups balanced and extends pack life. See cell matching in battery packs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I mix cell brands in one pack?
No. Different brands and models have different internal resistance and ageing behaviour. Mixing them makes the cells go out of balance and speeds up degradation.
Are Chinese tier-one cells reliable?
Major manufacturers such as EVE supply global OEMs and publish full datasheets and test summaries. Judge any cell by its data, certifications and traceability, not by its country of origin.
Which cell is best for cold climates?
Look at the discharge and charge temperature ranges separately. Many cells can discharge well below freezing but must not be charged below 0 °C unless the pack has a heater.
